The reason men/women are employed rather than machines is not because its cheaper. In fact, a man’s salary over sustained periods is much more expensive than buying technology to serve the same purpose. The reason is because it serves employment.

India resists mechanization not because its cheaper, but because it has so many unemployed people who have to be given jobs. If you’ve heard of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, it compromises what bulldozers and heavy machinery can do quickly and cheaply for human labour because the objective of the government is to provide employment.

@cheritycall : As much as I like your kind intentions I think charity is a form of alienation, a disconnect. A charity giver even with heart in the right place is implicitly acknowledging she/he is greater/well-to-do than the other person. It is empathy and not sympathy that people need. An act of charity crystallizes the takers identity of poverty.

I like the old proverb “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”

But it not only technology transfer we need, if possible try to understand what made them poor, if a phenomenon is rampant is there a systemic flaw somewhere in society which needs to be addressed. Urban migration is one factor which is silently accepted and not inquired further into.

When I was in Bombay, I drove past a woman who was sitting on the sidewalk, picking lice out of her daughter’s hair. The woman was roughly my age and the girl was about my daughter’s age. I’ve never forgotten that. How is it that I won the Life Lottery and they didn’t?
