Haha, that is categorically the best bribe story I’ve heard in ages. I’ve heard of larger deals or tenser transactions….but to pay a bribe for entering a park! Sigh, sorry, excuse my laughter. I’m picturing your faces – dilemma etched gloriously upon them.

I guess you guys have been here for a while now and know how shameless Indian cops(/people) are when dealing with white people. I too apologise on behalf of my country. Don’t pay bribes for such silly things though! Also, size up the cop. If he’s a young ‘un, be stern with him and in this case, just ask him the way out of the park! If he’s there cliched moustached cop, then give him Rs 200 and smile – and then ask for directions.

Question: can you bribe cops in the States?

Being in a secluded forest kind of changes the situation since there are no witnesses, but almost always, the best decision is not to pay. If they offer the choice between fine and bribe, refuse the bribe and offer to pay the fine. Chances are, they will let you go without paying anything. If you pay the fine, you have made official a conversation in which they demanded a bribe, and they can be prosecuted.

In Mumbai Airport, a customs official marked us as loaded NRIs returning home with goodies for the family. He pulled us out of the green line and made sure to go through ALL of our stuff very carefully. Ultimately, he decided to charge duties on our third laptop (two adults and two children: supposedly, at the time, adults could only carry one laptop and minors none). He offered a bribe at half price. Followed the strategy above, walked out not a paisa short.

When you are in a new country, you should’ve someone, say a local friend, you can trust for at least the first few days. You got off easily… this kinda stuff sometimes turn really bad.

I only mentioned this because my friend hooked me up with his teacher & her daughter when they wanted to experience the Buddhist circuit.

I didn’ t mind it & the company was enjoyable but I did kick his ass for his last-minute timin’.

400 bucks..you could have bribed atleast 4-5 thullas(that’s what they are called here)..anywaz now you know their price
